Irony Specimens: Bass Coast Jellyish (current)

Created before Fragile Futures developed, the Bass Coast jellyfish began as an independent sculptural series and quickly found a strong audience. Resin, light and preservation-style presentation reimagine local marine species as precious museum specimens. Some works later entered Fragile Futures, but the series remains independently recognised and commercially active.

I have selected four species of jellyfish found in Victorian waters which are in their medusa (adult) phase.

By creating natural history specimens under glass domes, I aim to highlight the fragility of the natural world and provide a glimpse into the beautiful unseen creatures we risk losing.

This is, however, an Anthropocene conservation paradox. To make these beautiful, delicate jellyfish I use an ABS-like resin, which is the same as the mass-produced consumer plastics polluting our oceans and endangering marine life.
